Finnish Technical Traders: Communications Manager as a Service

Our task

Finnish Technical Traders association (Teknisen Kaupan Liitto ry) is the most respected networking partner in Finnish technical trade. Its job is to guard the industry’s interests, provide its members with proactive information on changes in the operating environment, markets and legislation, and enhance the expertise of member companies. The association’s adviser staff manage the core functions, so they did not have the resources to take care of member and stakeholder communications, media communications, website updates and social media. There was a lot of work to do, but not enough to hire a full-time communications officer.

What we did

Mailand’s consultant acts as the association’s outsourced communications manager, planning and executing the association’s communications three days a week. The duties of the outsourced communications manager range from content production and distribution of members newsletters, to websites and social media management as well as events and media relations. Before the 2019 Parliamentary elections, the association organized meetings with the media and politicians in order to present views for the coming government’s program. The consultant works in the association’s premises, and as a member of the adviser team.

How did we succeed?

The outsourced communications manager is a PR professional who takes a firm grip of the industry and the operations of the association. The advisers do not have to spend their time making newsletters and updating websites, when they are handled by an outsourced expert. The advisers get a second opinion on communication issues when they need it.

The cooperation has increased the union’s member satisfaction. Our survey shows that  satisfaction with communication and the importance of communication have grown.

Satisfaction with communication in 2019 (on a scale of 1-4) 3.44
Satisfaction with communication in 2017 (on a scale of 1-4) 3.10

Significance of communication in 2019 (on a scale of 1-4) 3.09
Significance of communication in 2017 (on a scale of 1-4) 2.63
